Excerpt from The Most Holy Mother of God in the Songs of the Eastern Church: Translated From the Greek
The object of this book is to set before English readers a selection of Songs of the Most Holy Mother Of God out of the Service-books of the Holy Orthodox Eastern Church. These are presented in verse rather than in prose. Rightly or wrongly, I believe that, whether the originals be secular epigrams or sacred poetry, the most literal render ings into prose are less attractive to the ordinary reader than translation into English metrical verse in rhyme. Moreover, in this latter form they lend themselves better to music.
